About Sterchs

Enjoying a pint at the bar Sterchs Tavern, situated in the heart of Lincoln Park is a neighbourhood bar for those who dislike pretension and prefer the company of your own friends and a place to make new ones. Opened by Harlan Stern and Bob Smerch (the name being a mix of these two original owners) this Lincoln Park bar has a history of being a favorite haunt to many Chicago drinkers. The Chicago Seven, actors William Peterson and Bonnie Hunt, film critic Roger Ebert and former White Sox owner Bill Veck were all known to have frequented the bar in the past.

Perhaps one of the more infamous incidents occured when Hunter S. Thompson smashed up one of the urinals in the men's room. In a display of remorse, he later sent in a check for $700 to pay for the damage but added on a further $2500 for the potential of future visits.

Today, while not losing sight of it's tradition of an oasis in a what is often a cookie-cutter bar scene; Sterchs provides a relaxed but energetic atmosphere for customers new and old. Sit back and chill out on our Tuesday Jazz night or join us on a Sunday to cheer on Da Bears.

If you are looking for somewhere to be your home from home for you and your college alum, contact us to ask how we can become your Alumni Bar.
